Character name: Mephiles the Dark
Version: Sega (what else), somewhere between the fight with Team Morally Ambiguous and killing Sonic--no, there's really no better way of stating that. :|
Personality: Cold. Meticulous. Methodical. Mephiles is a manipulative bastard who relentlessly pursues what he wants. (Namely to reunite with Iblis, his other half, and become Solaris once more.) His plans tend to be complex and drawn-out, but they usually succeed, in the end, a lot of little pieces set in just the right places, like a well-executed game of chess. After ten years trapped, he's learned quite a bit of patience. Although defiance will irk him, and if you get in his way, consider yourself dead.

People, in his eyes, are simple. Their thoughts, their feelings, their motivations, all predictable. This makes him a master of trickery, using the right words the right way to nudge someone in the right direction, getting them to do exactly what he needs. Why do something himself when he can have a few hapless fools do it for him more efficiently? Those who don't go along with the plan are wild cards--intriguing but ultimately dangerous.

He kills without mercy if he has to or gets others to do it for him. If a few people--or a whole planet full of them--have to go to waste in order to fulfill his goals, then so be it. They are pathetic, weak, greedy. They attempted to use the powers of the gods for their own selfish wants and needs, after all. A new civilization will eventually rise from the ashes anyway, hopefully one with a little more respect.

That's not to say he doesn't have a sense of humor, ironic and dry though it may be. He seems to get enjoyment out of watching all of his puppets run around the playing field or attempting to convert others to his "cause". He even enjoys a good fight now and then, simply to beat anyone who dares think they can stand against him into the ground.

History: Solaris was worshipped by the people of Soleanna as their sun god. For ages, Solaris had been respected as such, watching over the people, observing their development, eventually becoming a simple flame entrusted to the royal family. Such times were prosperous and peaceful until the demand for technological development overrode their respect in an ancient power.

Approximately ten years ago, the king of Soleanna led a team of scientists into an experiment at harnessing Solaris' powers of time-space warping. They intended to use this ability to erase their past sins and become an even greater society than they already were. But something went wrong. Their attempt at containing, controlling, and experimenting upon a god backfired, and the machine exploded, killing almost everyone in the room instantly and the energies of the machine splitting the god in two--the pure power and flame of Iblis and the creeping shadows and mind of Mephiles. Too weak to join back together, they attempted to flee, but Silver caught up to Iblis, the flames sealed within the child princess Elise before her father the king died, and Shadow used the power of a Chaos Emerald to seal Mephiles away into the Scepter of Darkness.

Ten years go by, and GUN sends Rouge to get the Scepter, and Shadow’s sent along to make sure she gets out safely. Only Eggman shows up, causes a ruckus, and makes Rouge drop it, releasing the shade within--which instantly destroys Eggman’s many mechs, and since he has at least some idea of what’s in said Scepter, he wisely retreats and lets Rouge and Shadow deal with the contents. Mephiles literally steals Shadow’s own shadow to create a body for himself, and the irony is not lost on him. To "repay" the two for releasing him, he sends them 200 years into the future, where the world has been devastated by Iblis' flames.

It is there in the future that he comes across Blaze and Silver and convince them that in order to save their world, they must go back and kill the "Iblis Trigger" – one Sonic the Hedgehog.

After taking those two to the present, a series of events occur that eventually ends up with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles being sent 200 years into the future by Eggman and helping Rouge and Shadow find a way back. Before Shadow joins them in returning to the present, Mephiles appears from the shadows to entice him away. Mephiles shows Shadow a possible future--the future that they are in right now--of him having been captured and imprisoned by humanity. It’s an attempt at trying to woo Shadow to his side, to both get him out of the way and gain a powerful ally. When that tactic doesn’t work, the two do battle, and while Shadow gets beaten, Omega comes to help beat Mephiles back, having been ordered to wait for Shadow with an Emerald by Rouge in the present. When Mephiles escapes to the present, Shadow and Omega follow.

Confused yet? Silver and Blaze run into Mephiles asking about the Iblis Trigger, wondering just who he is after wondering if it’s right to kill him. He waves the question off and points them in the right direction. Eventually Omega finds and confronts Mephiles (or perhaps vice versa), and as Omega attempts to riddle the half-god full of holes, Mephiles reveals that it is Omega’s fate to seal Shadow away in the future.

When finally confronted by Team Dark, Mephiles tries and fails one more time to sway Shadow before an epic battle ensues. When sealing him in the Scepter again doesn’t work, having become too powerful for the same thing to work twice, he uses two Chaos Emeralds to make limitless clones for himself. During the fight, distracting Team Dark with all of his copies, Mephiles makes his escape in order to find and kill Sonic, thus completing his plan. However...he winds up in Station Square instead.
